The Role Of Media In Our Society

The Role Of Media In Our Society

Once of the earliest proverbs we learn at school is "The pen is mightier than the sword".This signifies ht importance and power of literature which has the ability to influence people more than any war or conquest. The written material is the source and fundamental part of media.with the advent of modern technology the media has diversified into many forms such as radio,TV,and internet. Together these play a very important role in shaping up the views and opinions of the world.

There is a well known saying "with great power comes great responsibility".The media ought to play a constructive role in the society. As such its role is a paramount importance since its conduct has a bearing on each one's lives style. In modern times we have seen that media has the power to accomplish seemingly impossible task. The role of media can be compared to that of a river.when harnessed properly the river is the lifetime of many people. But when in spate the same river can become disastrous .similarly when left uncontrolled the media can wreak havoc in the society.Hence there is a need for constant introspection within the fourth estate to ensure that it does not overstep its limit.

The politics of our country and the peoples perceptions regarding the same has been increasingly influenced by the media .Mr Modi cruised to a historic victory in the General Election of 2014 having employed the media to project himself as the harbinger of changes from the policy paralysis of the UPA-2 .In particular he made tremendous use of social media to influence the country's youth.

The internet has become one of the most powerful tools of the media.Social networking sites such as Facebook,LinkedIn and Twitter connect people all over the world ,reducing the barriers between the continents to just a click away.they have provide important platform for raising relevant issues facing the society.they also help in establishing a greater level of interaction between peoples of different cultures and tradition and religion ,thus helping us understand each other better. We also have blogs written by many eminent personalities ,in which they voice their comments and opinions on various issues. The all pervasive Internet has made virtually everything online cookery ,shows, counselling and yoga session watching movies etc.

Anything in excess is not good and the same principle applies to the media.Sometimes the media tends to go overboard in zest. This can lead to incorrect reporting facts and does more harm than good.Social media has come under fire from some quarters of the society for encouraging people to divulge personal and /or irrelevant details which is neither safe nor a productive use of their time .Excessive and sensational reporting has often led to disruption of law and order.

An impartial and vibrant media is an essential part of a developed and peaceful country .It is vital that the media performs its intended duty of serving the people in the right way. Only then will we see the establishment of a progressive and liberal world/country/society.
